Hyaluronic Acid Irritates My Skin. Is Ectoin A Good Replacement for it?

Amidst all the CleanTok (cleaning content on TikTok) content, you would think that bacteria is the worst thing ever to exist! Of course, yes, we need to be hygienic, but the truth is — microbiology cannot be defeated, and in many cases, bacteria can actually help us, and I’m not just talking about probiotics! Let’s take a look at ectoin.

What is Ectoin?

Ectoin is a lab-synthesized or naturally grown compound produced by halophilic bacteria. Halophilic bacteria thrive in extreme environments such as hot springs, salt lakes, and deserts. Initially discovered as a protective substance for these bacteria, scientists observed that ectoin was helping them survive extreme stress from heat, salinity, and UV radiation.

So, can these benefits be transferred to the skin?

Yes, ectoin is used in many skincare formulas because of its potent ability to protect and hydrate the skin. It can form a protective layer around cells by binding to water molecules, locking in hydration for sustained periods of time!

Furthermore, ectoin is also an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredient, meaning it both soothes the skin and protects it from damage. And as mentioned before, it is also a humectant, and ingredient that holds water in the skin.

What skin types is ectoin for?

Ectoin works well on all skin types. However, it works especially well on sensitive skin, and can be a wonderful replacement for hyaluronic acid! Some people have experienced irritation upon using hyaluronic acid due to transepidermal water loss. This is when HA draws water from the lower layers of the skin, potentially leading to drying effects.

Some scientists also posit that “low-molecular-weight Hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA) exhibits proinflammatory effects, while high-molecular-weight Hyaluronic acid (HMW-HA) functions as an anti-inflammatory factor.” More simply, there are different hyaluronic acids, and some may cause more irritation while others may not.

However, opting for products with ectoin is a great way to remove this risk factor as it is renowned for being sensitive skin-friendly. You should still speak to your dermatologist about what is right for you though.

Here are some ectoin-focused products from brands that we love!
