To begin with, peptides and collagen are both humectants, meaning they both pull and hold water into the skin. Both ingredients are often used to attain bouncy skin. However, they do have some key differences. Peptides are amino acids, which are considered the building blocks of proteins such as keratin (the main protein in our skin).
On the other hand, collagen is an actual protein, and it is the most abundant protein in the body, comprising up to 25-35% of the body's protein content. Collagen provides support and strength to connective tissue in the skin. Sounds great, right? Well, the problem with collagen is that the molecules are often too large to penetrate the skin, meaning your skin reaps minimal benefits from using it.
So, is using collagen pointless?
Not necessarily. Even when applied topically, collagen has emollient-like properties that can help moisturize, smooth the skin, and protect the skin barrier. Now, one thing to consider is collagen peptides. Collagen peptides are much smaller, and they actually have a better chance of getting into those deep layers of the skin. Plus, peptides are said to stimulate collagen production.
At this point, they can actually impart moisture and help with cellular processes. Keep in mind, though — there are different types of peptides, but if you're specifically interested in collagen, collagen peptides might be the way to go.
And even though there is no extensive research or substantial evidence on the topical application of peptides, peptides are known for enhancing skin hydration, repair, and anti-inflammatory benefits. They are also known for plumping up fine lines and giving firmness and elasticity to the skin.
Can I use peptides and collagen together?
Using a collagen cream would actually be a great choice for locking a peptide serum in. The cream will give the peptides more moisture to work with, and the collagen will also moisturize and help the skin barrier to retain ceramides, the building blocks of the skin. Meanwhile, the peptides can hydrate the lower levels of the skin. Using the two together, can help provide a multi-level hydration and moisture skin treatment.
